The Shanghai Institute of Immunity and Infection (SIII) is a research institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is determined to serve global public health and is an important force active in the field of global infectious disease prevention and control. Transformational research is an important base for gathering international, high-end talent.
The Unit of Statistical Genetics of Bacteria develops new methods for analyzing large scale genomic datasets. We aim to understand the causes and consequences of genetic variation in highly recombining bacterial species from historical, functional, medical, ecological, and evolutionary perspectives. Prof. Falush graduated from University of Cambridge and University College London, and has worked at the University of Tokyo, the Max Planck Institute (Germany), and the University of Oxford. Since 2019, he has been a group leader in Shanghai. He has published more than 80 papers in high-impact journals (Science, Nature, PLoS Genetics, Elife) and has been awarded, for example, the Hundred Talents Program Fund of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an NSFC Senior Foreign Talent grant.
The Unit of Statistical Genetics of Bacteria (PI: Prof. Dr. Daniel Falush) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work on the population genetics of highly recombining bacterial pathogens, including Helicobacter pylori and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The fellow will develop novel statistical genetic analyses to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology.
Recombinogenic bacteria are interesting because their genetic variation shares features with eukaryotic species, including a history of population splits and well mixed gene pools, but like other bacteria have clonal structure. Our work has for example identified “deep clones”, “ecospecies” and admixture driven by deleterious mutations. We have approaching 10,000 genomes from V. parahaemolyticus and H. pylori as well as a phenotyping experiments and transcriptomic data and are interested to characterize additional highly recombining species, based on a large database of bacterial variation.
